The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala has issued a security alert advising American citizens to exercise “increased caution” while in the country, following a surge in violence linked to gang activity. The alert, released on March 10, 2025, comes after gangs seized control of three prisons and initiated coordinated attacks against police in various areas of Guatemala City.
The embassy’s alert noted that while the shelter-in-place order for its staff has been lifted, the situation remains precarious. “The situation remains tense with coordinated, armed attacks on police in several zones of Guatemala City,” the alert stated. Americans traveling in Guatemala are encouraged to monitor local media for updates, avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, and maintain a low profile. They are also advised to reevaluate their personal security plans and limit unnecessary movements.
H2: Escalating Violence Linked to Gangs
The security alert follows a series of violent incidents, including attacks on Guatemalan police forces after gangs reportedly took 43 guards hostage during prison riots, resulting in the deaths of at least ten officers. President Bernardo Arévalo declared a state of emergency in response to these events, which he described as “coordinated actions by self-named maras or gangs against state security forces.” Major criminal organizations such as Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), both classified as terrorist organizations by Guatemala and the United States, are believed to be involved.
The violence has raised concerns about the safety of both residents and tourists in the country. The Guatemalan Tourism Institute reported that over 2.9 million international visitors traveled to Guatemala between January and November 2025, highlighting the importance of security for the tourism sector.
In a statement to the Associated Press, the U.S. Embassy condemned the attacks, stating, “These terrorists, as well as those who cooperate with them or are linked to them, have no place in our hemisphere.” The embassy emphasized the need for the stability and security of the Guatemalan people, reaffirming support for the nation’s security forces in combating the violence.
H2: Travel Advisory Level Raised
In light of the escalating violence, the U.S. State Department has categorized Guatemala at a “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” status. This advisory is part of a four-tier system that evaluates safety risks for travelers. The levels are: Level 1 – Exercise Normal Precautions; Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution; Level 3 – Reconsider Travel; and Level 4 – Do Not Travel.
As the situation develops, the embassy continues to monitor the circumstances closely and provides updates to ensure the safety of American citizens in Guatemala. Travelers are urged to remain vigilant and informed as they navigate the current climate of unrest.
