In a concealed training facility in Ukraine, military instructor known as “DC” is preparing the next generation of drone pilots. The training takes place in a repurposed warehouse, where students learn to operate First-Person-View (FPV) drones. These small yet powerful devices have become essential for Ukraine’s defense against Russia since the onset of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The training at the Killhouse Academy combines computer simulations with hands-on practice. Students must navigate a challenging course designed to replicate real battlefield conditions. “In the battlefield, all you have to do is travel the biggest distance possible and fly, with such bad signal that your eyes will bleed,” DC explained while demonstrating the drone’s capabilities. Both military personnel and civilians participate in this rigorous training, which emphasizes precision and control.
DC highlights the importance of maintaining composure in high-pressure situations. “You have to be calm; you cannot see a target and rush to it like a bull,” he stated. “You have to be able to be thinking and watching and detecting your target.” This level of focus is critical, especially given the potential for drones to be armed with explosives and deployed against specific targets.
The integration of drones into warfare has transformed military strategies. According to estimates, drones account for approximately 80% of military casualties in Ukraine, illustrating their significant impact on the conflict. DC noted that the adaptability of drone operators is vital. “Only those who adapt survive,” he remarked, emphasizing the continuous arms race between Ukrainian and Russian forces.
The U.S. military is observing the conflict closely, recognizing the changing landscape of warfare. On June 6, 2023, President Trump signed the “Unleashing American Drone Dominance” executive order, which aims to bolster domestic production of affordable and effective drones. The Pentagon has announced plans to acquire 200,000 drones with lethal capabilities by 2027 as part of its Drone Dominance Program.
The effectiveness of drones has provided Ukraine with a strategic advantage, allowing them to level the playing field against a numerically superior Russian military. DC remains focused on training others to engage effectively with enemy drone operators. “It’s a constant race for us and for them, to find an upper hand over the enemy,” he said, underscoring the urgency of the training initiatives.
