Holiday Travel Surge: Gas Prices Drop, Millions Hit the Road

URGENT UPDATE: As the holiday travel season kicks off, millions of Americans are set to hit the road, buoyed by falling gas prices and soaring travel numbers. The national average for a gallon of gas has dipped to $2.88, the lowest December rate since 2020, providing a welcome relief for year-end travelers.

Travel forecasts from the American Automobile Association (AAA) indicate that over 122 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the peak period from December 20 through January 1. This marks a 2.2% increase from last year, surpassing the previous record of 119.7 million travelers.

“Year-end travel is a mix of family road trips, friend getaways, and tropical vacations,” said Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel. The desire to travel remains strong, whether returning to hometowns or exploring new destinations.

In Pennsylvania, drivers are facing higher prices, with the statewide average at $3.11 per gallon, though down from $3.22 a year ago. Lackawanna County leads with prices at $3.14, while the lowest prices can be found in Northumberland County at $2.86. Warren County holds the highest average in the state at $3.54.

AAA predicts that 109.5 million Americans will travel by car, a 2% increase from last year. Additionally, around 8.03 million are expected to take to the skies, marking the first time domestic air travel during this season will exceed 8 million passengers. The busiest days for air travel are anticipated to be December 26, December 29, and December 27.

Travelers should prepare for congested roads and heavy airport traffic. According to INRIX, Christmas week will see significant road usage, especially on December 26, as families return home after celebrations. The worst traffic is expected between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., necessitating careful planning.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission forecasts nearly 7.4 million vehicles will travel the turnpike system between December 19 and January 1, with the busiest days expected from December 22 to December 24.

To enhance traveler safety and ease congestion, all roadway construction and maintenance work will be halted from 5 a.m. on December 19 through 11 p.m. on January 1. Additional personnel will be deployed alongside Pennsylvania State Police to ensure safe travel.

As holiday travelers embark on their journeys, the combination of lower gas prices and increased travel demand signifies a bustling season ahead. Prepare for the roads to be busy and plan accordingly to make the most of your holiday travels.
