Startup Ulo Simplifies Access to Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Men experiencing symptoms such as thinning hair, decreased energy, and a reduced sex drive may find relief through a new service offered by the telehealth startup Ulo. Focused on providing testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), Ulo aims to address the natural decline in testosterone levels that many men begin to experience in their late 30s or 40s. As interest in TRT grows, Ulo’s approach makes accessing treatment more straightforward.

The phenomenon often referred to as Andropause or colloquially as “Manopause” occurs when testosterone levels drop, leading to various symptoms, including hair loss, fatigue, and diminished libido. According to Deep Patel, co-founder of Ulo, many men are increasingly frustrated by the misconception that these issues are merely a part of aging. “Men are tired of feeling off and being told it’s just aging or stress,” Patel noted. “They’re realizing it’s not normal to feel constantly exhausted, unmotivated, or emotionally flat at 35 or 45.”

Research indicates that nearly 39% of men aged 45 and older have low testosterone, also known as hypogonadism. Patel emphasizes that this condition is not limited to older men, as younger individuals in their 20s, 30s, and 40s also report symptoms associated with low testosterone. Factors such as stress, poor diet, and lack of sleep contribute to this growing issue.

Ulo’s Unique Approach to TRT

Ulo was co-founded by Patel and Rob English to help men regain control over their health, particularly regarding hormone levels and hair loss. Initially focusing on hair loss prevention, the company has expanded into the TRT market after witnessing the profound impact of testosterone therapy on men’s lives. “I watched friends lose their hair way too young and struggle in silence,” Patel shared. Many of these men also suffered from mental fatigue, which improved after beginning TRT.

Emerging research highlights that the average testosterone levels in American men have declined about 1% per year since the 1980s, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology. This trend has prompted Patel to describe the situation as “a silent epidemic.” A 2019 survey found that 52% of men reported increased energy levels after starting TRT, while 42%Benefits and Considerations of TRT

Patel explains that many men notice significant improvements after just a few weeks of treatment. Increased energy, better sleep, and heightened libido are often the first benefits experienced. Over a period of two to three months, users may also see changes in body composition, including enhanced muscle growth and fat loss.

While TRT has its benefits, it is not without risks. Common side effects include acne, water retention, and elevated red blood cell counts, which can thicken blood. There are also potential fertility concerns, as TRT can suppress natural testosterone production and reduce sperm count. Patel advises those concerned about fertility to discuss options like HCG or enclomiphene with their healthcare provider.

Currently, TRT is only approved by the FDA for specific medical conditions, such as hypogonadism. In early 2023, the FDA updated labeling for testosterone products, highlighting potential side effects, including increased blood pressure. Patel stresses the importance of seeking medical guidance for TRT rather than purchasing unregulated medications online.

Ulo’s mission is to provide safe, effective, and transparent treatment options for men. “At Ulo, we take the time to assess whether TRT is the right choice for you,” Patel said, emphasizing that their approach is rooted in individualized care rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. The program includes regular follow-ups and adjustments based on individual progress, ensuring men receive the support they need throughout their treatment journey.

As Ulo continues to grow, its focus remains on redefining how men approach their health, particularly in areas often overlooked. By simplifying access to testosterone replacement therapy, Ulo aims to empower men to reclaim their vitality and improve their overall quality of life.
