Mitchell County Dominates Sectionals as Darius Robinson Powers Eagles Toward Third State Title

Mitchell County Eagles Surge Toward Third Straight State Track Championship

PEMBROKE — Darius Robinson turned the Class A Division II sectional meet into his personal highlight reel this week, driving the Mitchell County Eagles closer to a historic third consecutive state track and field championship. The dominant performance unfolded at Bryan County High School, where Robinson seized first place in the 200-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles, and 300-meter hurdles, electrifying his team and sending a clear message to competitors ahead of the GHSA State Championships scheduled May 11 at the University of Georgia in Athens.

Mitchell County’s Eagles, two-time defending state champions, delivered a powerhouse showing—scoring big across sprints, hurdles, distance runs, relays, and field events despite South Georgia’s sweltering heat. Robinson’s exceptional speed and stamina fueled the Eagles, but their success also relied on impressive team depth.

Team Depth Shines Beyond Robinson’s Dominance

Senior distance runner Willie Davis showed up strong, taking second place in the 1600-meter and third in the 800-meter run, while Parnell Yates secured third place in the long jump. Other standout Eagles included Montorie Lee (sixth in triple jump) and Marcus Vicks (fourth in 200 meters), rounding out Mitchell County’s all-around threat.

The Eagles also controlled the hurdles beyond Robinson’s sweep. Jerran Grissom and Jonathan Isom took third and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles respectively, then reversed positions with Isom third and Grissom fourth in the 300-meter hurdles, deepening the team’s scoring potential in two of the meet’s most grueling events.

Mitchell County’s relay squads further cemented their dominance, finishing third in the 4×100, second in the 4×200, sixth in the 4×400, and second in the 4×800 relay. This widespread scoring sets the Eagles up to flood the scoreboard in Athens and chase history, not just respect, as they seek a third straight state crown.

Southwest Georgia Stars Deliver Across the Board

Outside of Mitchell County, other Southwest Georgia athletes also stunned with top finishes. Early County’s sprinters showed speed and depth as Kayden Kendrix placed second and teammate Andreveion Lee fourth in the 100-meter dash, while Jammel Griffin earned second place in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Randolph-Clay’s Tyre Smith grabbed third in the 400, rounding out a fiercely competitive sprint field.

Baconton Charter distance runners Anthony Escalante and Tyler Hayes continued their strong season with multiple top finishes in middle- and long-distance events, including Hayes’ second place in the 3200-meter run. Field events highlighted Terrell County’s Kaleb White, who soared to a sectional championship in the long jump, with strong follow-ups from Mitchell County and Early County in that event.

Relay events showcased breadth across the region as well, with Early County winning the 4×100 relay and placing fourth in the 4×400. Terrell County and Baconton Charter also earned key places in other relays, underlining the increasing competitiveness of South Georgia’s track scene.

Eyes Turn Toward Athens for State Showdown

With a dominant sectional sweep led by Darius Robinson’s triple victories and contributions from a deep support cast, the Mitchell County Eagles have solidified their status as front-runners for the upcoming state championships. Their expansive threat across every track and field discipline means they won’t just compete—they will dictate the meet’s outcome when the state’s best gather on May 11 at the University of Georgia.

As the Eagles prepare to chase history rather than respect, Ohio and national track fans should watch this powerhouse team and its standout senior closely. Mitchell County’s blend of star power and team depth defines a dynasty in motion aiming for unprecedented success.
