Kiana Safari Dominates Aila Papadopoulos to Claim SCCAL Title

UPDATE: Aptos High sophomore Kiana Safari has just clinched the title at the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) singles championship, defeating Aila Papadopoulos of Scotts Valley High with a commanding score of 6-2, 6-0. The match took place at Imperial Courts on Thursday, marking Safari’s successful title defense and her return to the prestigious Central Coast Section (CCS) Singles Tournament on Nov. 17-19.

Safari, the top seed, showcased her off-season training at No Quit Tennis Academy in Las Vegas, where she dedicated over a month to enhance her skills. Her preparation proved vital against Papadopoulos, who aimed to tire Safari with a strategic game plan. “It was pretty fun,” Safari remarked post-match, acknowledging the strong performance from her opponent. “She played so good. She has improved so much.”

The victory not only extends Safari’s impressive record to 19-3 in her two-year varsity career but also sets the stage for her anticipated performance at the CCS tournament, where she seeks redemption after an earlier first-round exit last season.

In doubles action, Francesca Garces and Julia Kennedy from Santa Cruz secured a significant win against Aptos twins Isabella and Natalia Calderon, finishing strong with a score of 6-1, 6-3. The dynamic duo will also be competing in the CCS Doubles Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 18-19 at Bay Club Courtside.

Papadopoulos, who played two demanding matches in one day while also balancing volleyball commitments, expressed her determination to excel despite the challenges. “It’s been super hard,” she said, reflecting on juggling sports and academics while aiming for a spot at a UC school.

Safari’s rigorous training regimen included interval workouts and strength training, contributing to her enhanced performance. “I have stronger legs and hips,” she explained, emphasizing her improved shot power. Her coach, Tamara Brown, praised Safari’s adaptability during matches, stating, “Kiana’s problem solving and ability to adjust to her opponents is one of the keys to her continued success.”

As both athletes look ahead, Safari is motivated to advance further in the CCS tournament, hoping to surpass her previous results. “Hopefully, I can win a couple of rounds, get to the quarterfinals or semifinals,” she stated confidently.

With the SCCAL season concluding, all eyes will now turn to the upcoming CCS tournaments, where both Safari and the doubles team of Garces and Kennedy aim to make their mark. The excitement surrounding high school tennis in Santa Cruz continues to build, as fans and families rally behind their local stars.
