Officers Trevon Hartley and Ricardo Barragan arrived at the scene of a rapidly spreading fire, where a family was trapped on a second-floor balcony. Hartley was the first on the scene, navigating through thick smoke and intense heat. The chaos of the situation demanded immediate action as flames engulfed the hallway.
“You could see the smoke even more. Just going towards the building, you could see obviously, OK, we need to do something now because if we don’t, something bad can happen,”
Barragan recounted, emphasizing the urgency of their response.
The officers quickly devised a plan to rescue the family. With no time to lose, they instructed the girl’s parents to drop their daughter to the ground. Hartley, a former wide receiver for the San Jose State Spartans, demonstrated remarkable composure. “If you drop this kid, I’m going to catch her,” he asserted confidently, catching the toddler safely in his arms.
After the successful rescue of the girl, the family insisted on saving their dog. Barragan recalled, “Right after we caught the daughter, they instantly put the dog up. I was like, ‘Oh, there’s a dog now.’” The officers were able to catch the dog as well, showcasing their quick thinking and dedication.
Firefighters arrived shortly after and evacuated the remaining residents of the building, with no serious injuries reported. The community is rallying around Hartley and Barragan, who both grew up in Milpitas and even lived in the same apartment complex where the fire occurred. “We just did what had to be done to save lives,” said Hartley, reflecting on the harrowing experience. This incident highlights the extraordinary lengths to which first responders will go in the face of danger, reminding us all of their vital role in our communities.
