Every Wednesday, Max the Cat, a therapy cat, brightens the lives of residents at the Delta Retirement Center in Michigan. For several years, this charming Persian cat has made his rounds, visiting seniors who eagerly await his presence. With his cotton candy blue fur, Max has become a beloved fixture, bringing joy and laughter to those he encounters.
Max’s story is one of resilience. Adopted by Deb Small from the Capital Area Humane Society, Max faced a challenging past. After suffering severe abuse that led to the amputation of his hind leg, Small vowed to provide him with a safe and loving home. “At that point, it was a no-brainer. I said, ‘He’s coming home with me and nobody’s going to hurt this animal again,’” Small recalled.
From Recovery to Therapy
Once Max healed physically, Small recognized his potential to help others heal emotionally. She describes him as “a champion for the elderly,” emphasizing the importance of his role in the community. Alongside his work at the Delta Retirement Center, Max has expanded his mission across mid-Michigan, visiting various retirement centers and nursing homes. Small aims for each visit to leave residents feeling valued and appreciated.
“Max’s presence is transformative,” Small noted, highlighting the emotional connection he fosters with seniors. His visits serve a dual purpose: providing companionship and reminding elderly residents that they matter. The therapy cat has gained a reputation beyond Delta, with excursions to notable locations such as the Mackinac Bridge, Niagara Falls, and local car shows, where he recently secured first place cruising in Holt.
A Growing Phenomenon
Max’s adventures have garnered him a significant social media following, with 9,000 followers spanning 154 countries on Facebook. His fanbase includes people from diverse locations, including Australia, Antarctica, Siberia, Russia, China, and Japan. “He does like to travel,” Small remarked, noting Max’s enthusiasm for spreading his uplifting message.
Despite his disability, Max continues to thrive in his therapy role, showcasing an unwavering spirit. Small identifies herself as “the driver” and “the manager,” while Max remains the star of the show. His commitment to bringing joy and recognition to elderly residents across the region shows no signs of fading.
