Community Mourns Loss of Deacon Frederick James Rose III, 80

Frederick James Rose III, a beloved community figure and Deacon, passed away peacefully at his home in Redondo Beach, California, on January 22, 2026, at the age of 80. His life was marked by a profound commitment to service, love, and faith, which he shared with those around him.

Born at Camp White near Medford, Oregon, Fred was the son of Frederick James Rose Jr. and Lydia Gale Thomas. At the age of six months, his family moved to Manhattan Beach, California, where he would later build a life dedicated to community and family. He pursued education at American Martyrs School, Mira Costa High School, and El Camino College. From a young age, he exemplified values of compassion and generosity, leading him back to his Catholic roots and a significant role in the American Martyrs Parish.

Fred’s political affiliations reflected his steadfast beliefs. A lifelong Democrat and union advocate, he was a member of the Student American Federation of Teachers. His political journey took an unexpected turn when he met Suzie Alston during Student Government. Despite their differing political views—Fred’s liberal stance contrasted with Suzie’s conservative beliefs—the two developed a deep friendship that blossomed into a loving marriage lasting 37 years.

After graduating from high school, Fred joined the United States Naval Reserve, where he served for seven years, including two years of active duty aboard the USS Orleck. His service earned him accolades such as the Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his military service, he dedicated over thirty years to the United States Postal Service, where he served the public diligently.

In the early 1980s, Fred and Suzie returned to the Catholic Church at American Martyrs, becoming integral to the parish community. After a period of deep personal reflection, Fred answered the call to the Diaconate, serving in this capacity for 25 years. Even after retirement, he continued to volunteer, making regular appearances at the parish’s Welcome Center, where his gentle spirit and wisdom brought comfort to many.

Fred is remembered for his unwavering support of family and friends, his compassionate heart, and the strength he provided to those around him. His family expresses their deep gratitude to Ariana and Matt Smith, Vanessa Reyes-Smith, and the American Martyrs team for their exceptional care in his final years.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Suzie; his parents, Frederick and Lydia; and a network of in-laws and friends who cherished him throughout his life. Fred is survived by his cousin, Rhonda; brother, Michael Rose; sister-in-law, Debbie Rose; and several nieces and nephews who will carry on his legacy of love and faith.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 2:30 PM on February 28, 2026, at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach, California. Fred’s legacy of service and love will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
