Galaxy’s Riqui Puig to Undergo Knee Surgery After Setback

The LA Galaxy announced on March 15, 2026, that midfielder Riqui Puig will undergo surgery on his left knee following a setback in his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Puig originally sustained the injury during the 2024 Western Conference final against the Seattle Sounders and had missed the entire 2025 season as a result. The club confirmed the procedure is scheduled for March 16, 2026.

In a statement, the Galaxy explained, “Riqui Puig suffered a setback in his ACL recovery while in Barcelona, Spain. After consulting with club medical staff and outside specialists, it was determined that he would undergo a procedure tomorrow on his left knee.” The club indicated that details regarding his recovery timeline would be provided after the surgery.

Recovery Timeline Uncertain

Puig took to Instagram to express his determination, stating, “2025 tried to tear me in pieces. 2026 I’m not coming back. I never left.” Despite his optimism, reports suggest that his future participation in the current season is now uncertain. According to The Athletic, journalist Tom Bogert was the first to report the news, noting that Puig’s status for the remainder of 2026 is “in question.”

The midfielder was initially expected to make a late-season return in 2025, as the Galaxy did not place him on the season-ending list. Before the conclusion of last season, Puig had begun to ramp up his training in anticipation of a comeback. Greg Vanney, the Galaxy’s head coach, had expressed hope that Puig would be fully fit as the team prepared for the new season.

Contract and Future with the Galaxy

Puig, who is among the Galaxy’s three Designated Players, extended his contract in May 2024 through the 2027 season. His journey back to fitness has been closely followed by fans and analysts alike, particularly given his potential impact on the team’s performance.

As the Galaxy prepares for the upcoming season, they will also be focusing on strengthening their roster. Recently, the club acquired defender Jakob Glesnes in a trade with the Philadelphia Union and is gearing up for competition in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The Galaxy closed their previous season with an exhibition match against Club America, which ended in a draw. As they look ahead, the implications of Puig’s surgery will likely play a significant role in their strategy and performance in the months to come.
