Deadly Hit-and-Run Claims Life of Toddler and Man in Playa del Rey
A 1-year-old child and a man around 30 years old were killed early Sunday in a devastating hit-and-run crash near the 6800 block of South Vista Del Mar in Playa del Rey, police confirm. The crash happened at about 4:30 a.m., when two vehicles collided and the driver of one fled the scene on foot, heading toward the beach.
The Los Angeles Police Department identified the suspect vehicle as a white Jeep, and investigators say the hit-and-run driver is believed to be a 25-year-old man who remains at large.
Bystander’s Desperate Efforts to Save Injured Toddler
Local resident Cory Cooper was among the first to arrive after hearing the crash. Cooper, a father of two, described the harrowing scene as he tried to save the child’s life alongside others before emergency crews arrived.
“When I walked up to the accident, there were some people already there and a man holding the child, and it didn’t look like the child was doing well, so we gave him CPR, waited for 911 … we tried to give the baby CPR for as long as we could, as best as we could, until the ambulance got there.”
Another woman at the scene was seen cradling the baby, expressing hope that the child was still warm despite the grave injuries. Sadly, the child later died from trauma suffered in the collision.
Victims and Ongoing Search for Suspect
In addition to the toddler, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman estimated to be around 30 years old was also seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital, but her condition has not been publicly released. Police say the names of all victims have not yet been disclosed.
The hit-and-run driver’s whereabouts are unknown. Authorities continue to pursue leads and urge anyone with information about the white Jeep or the suspect’s identity to come forward immediately.
