Iowa Women’s Wrestling to Compete for NCAA Title This Weekend

UPDATE: Iowa is set to make history as it hosts the inaugural NCAA National Championships for women’s wrestling this weekend, March 6-7, at Coralville’s Xtream Arena. With a remarkable 14-1 dual record this season and over 30 champions crowned at various invitationals, the anticipation is palpable as 180 student-athletes from 52 programs prepare to compete for the prestigious title.

During a press conference held Thursday at the arena, officials expressed their excitement. Luke Eustice, Director of the Iowa City Area Sports Commission, stated, “We are very, very excited about this event. We think we’ll do a really good job.” He emphasized how proud they are to host such a significant milestone in women’s sports.

The championship will spotlight Iowa’s own Kylie Welker, a standout redshirt junior who boasts an unblemished 17-0 record this season. Welker secured her place in the championships after winning the title at 180 pounds during the Regional Qualifiers in Indianola, Iowa. She is set to face off against Genevieve An from Lehigh in her opening match.

“It’s really special,” Welker remarked about participating in this historic event. “I’ve been part of a lot of firsts, and our program has been a first in many areas. We continue to make history and break barriers.”

Coaching the team is Clarissa Chun, who has been at the helm since November 2021. She encouraged her athletes to embrace the moment. “I just really want our women to go out there, enjoy these moments, and be true to who they are,” Chun said. “If they present themselves and their style of wrestling on the mat, then the outcome will take care of itself.”

The championship kicks off at 10 a.m. on Friday, featuring 10 Hawkeye wrestlers among the competitors. Fans and supporters are eager to witness this milestone event, where athletes aim to etch their names into the annals of sports history.

As Iowa prepares to host this groundbreaking tournament, the focus shifts to the remarkable athletes and the potential for historic outcomes. Stay tuned for live updates and results as the competition unfolds this weekend.
