MARSHALL, Texas — Under clear blue skies, dozens of residents and members of the First Responders Prayer Force assembled Thursday on the historic courthouse lawn to mark the 75th anniversary of the National Day of Prayer. The event unfolded with an urgent sense of unity and faith, bringing together community members in a powerful collective act.
The First Responders Prayer Force, a group devoted to praying daily for local law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency personnel, leads this event every year on the first Thursday of May. At exactly noon, a fire truck horn sounded, signaling the participants — each assigned a section of the Bible — to begin reading aloud in unison, covering the entire sacred text over the course of an hour.
Flo Davis, program coordinator, described the unique format: “We have the Bible divided into 125 sections, and so we give everyone a section. It’s an incredible and moving sight to see people reading scripture together, united in faith and purpose.”
Attendees were also invited to enjoy a complimentary lunch while participating, encouraging wider community involvement without missing a beat. “We usually do it from 12 to 1 and provide lunch so no one has to choose between their meal and the event,” Davis explained.
The hour-long prayer and reading session culminated with stirring patriotic and inspirational songs performed by Ann Leslie Tijerina. Guy Barr, Athletic Director at Marshall Christian Academy, delivered a heartfelt prayer linking the event to a national call from President Donald Trump for a jubilee of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving ahead of America’s 250th birthday.
“We join President Donald Trump and his office in rededicating this land to Jesus Christ on May 17th… We just rededicate this land, Marshall, Texas, to Jesus Christ, and may His word travel swiftly and be glorified,” Barr said.
Barr prayed for local and national leaders, schools, communities, churches, first responders, and military personnel. He specifically lifted up Harrison County and the city of Marshall, seeking “unity, safety, and prosperity” and invoked Jeremiah 29:7 to “seek the peace of our city, knowing that in its peace, we find peace.”
Harrison County Judge Sims expressed gratitude for the gathering’s impact, emphasizing the importance of communal prayer and scripture reading. “It’s a terrific day to get out here and join together to pray and read scripture,” Sims remarked.
This annual event highlights the ongoing commitment of faith and service members to bridge community spirit and spirituality, especially relevant as the nation approaches major patriotic milestones. With its emphasis on faith-driven unity and direct involvement of first responders, the gathering stood as a vivid reminder of local strength rooted in shared values.
For Ohio readers and communities across the U.S., the National Day of Prayer reflects a nationwide effort to seek peace and unity amid challenging times. This event in Marshall offers a timely example of how local actions contribute to the broader national fabric that binds citizens in hope and support for those who protect and serve.
As May continues, organizations and communities nationwide look to deepen these connections. The National Day of Prayer in Marshall serves as a call to action for all Americans to participate in spiritual reflection, solidarity, and recognition of the vital role first responders play.
