Mountain View Surges Past Holy Cross, Advances to 2A Final

UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, the Mountain View Lady Eagles rallied from a nine-point deficit to defeat the Holy Cross Lady Crusaders 50-44 in the District 2 Class 2A semifinals, securing their spot in the championship game on February 27, 2024, at 4 p.m. against top-seeded Wyoming Seminary.

The semifinal match, held at Mountain View’s J. William McLaughlin Gymnasium, saw Holy Cross jump to an early lead, fueled by impressive 3-point shooting that pushed them ahead 36-27 midway through the third quarter. However, Lady Eagles’ coach Corey Gesford urged his team to stay composed during a crucial timeout, stating, “It was deep-breath time, that there was plenty of ball game left.”

Mountain View responded with a stellar defensive performance, holding Holy Cross to just 8 points in the final 14 minutes of play. Lady Eagles’ standout player, Addison Kilmer, led the charge with an impressive 25 points, 15 rebounds, and five steals. Teammate Emily Trichilo added 11 points, including a pivotal 3-pointer that shifted momentum in the fourth quarter.

Holy Cross, despite their commendable effort, struggled to maintain their early momentum. Led by Aniya Osgood, who scored 14 points with four 3-pointers, the Lady Crusaders found themselves stifled as Mountain View tightened its defense. Coach Lindsay Howard praised her team’s effort, emphasizing the importance of their shooting strategies, yet acknowledged the experience of Mountain View in high-stakes situations.

As the game progressed, Mountain View’s relentless defense allowed them to mount a comeback. After a crucial scoring drought from Holy Cross, the Lady Eagles went on a 12-0 run to take the lead 38-36 with just over a minute left in the third quarter. Trichilo’s corner 3-pointer proved to be a game-changer, igniting the crowd and boosting the Lady Eagles’ confidence.

Mountain View maintained their lead through the fourth quarter, with Kilmer and Trichilo executing key plays that ultimately sealed the victory. With just seconds remaining, Aubrey Sanders made two free throws, clinching the game and ensuring Mountain View’s place in the finals.

The upcoming clash against Wyoming Seminary promises to be exciting, as it is a rematch of last year’s semifinal, which Mountain View won in overtime. With a season record of 18-6, the Lady Eagles are not only vying for the district title but are also assured of a PIAA Class 2A playoff berth.

As the excitement builds for the championship game, Kilmer expressed the team’s determination, stating, “We’ve worked so hard all season… now we’re in the hunt for the district championship. It means a lot.”

Fans are eager to see if Mountain View can capitalize on their momentum and experience as they prepare for this crucial matchup. Stay tuned for more updates as the championship game approaches.
