Rockfall Mitigation Urgently Closes Colorado Highway 3 for Repairs

URGENT UPDATE: Colorado Highway 3 in Durango is now closed for two weeks as crews begin critical rockfall mitigation work. The closure, effective February 26, 2024, is necessary to ensure the safety of motorists after rocks damaged a retaining fence designed to prevent debris from reaching the road.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced the closure following inspections led by geohazards geologist Regan French. French described the situation as a “Christmas gift” for her team, as they were alerted to falling rocks just before the New Year. “It was like a day or two before Christmas,” she said, noting that this discovery spurred immediate planning for safety measures.

Highway 3, a vital route alongside the Animas River, has a history of rockfall hazards due to its proximity to sandstone cliffs. French emphasized the importance of the mitigation efforts, stating, “We’re keeping the road shut for the entirety of this, because it’s not really safe for anyone to travel while this fence is completely open.”

Workers from Apex Rockfall Mitigation LLC, based in Grand Junction, are on-site, using a two-rope rappel system to access the cliffside. The initial phase involves removing loose rocks to create a safer working environment for further repairs. French detailed the process: “Dropping loose rocks is the first phase of the project,” adding that this will allow crews to secure new posts for the retaining fence.

The subsequent phase will see workers drilling anchors for new posts, ensuring they are firmly secured with grout and cable anchors. French highlighted Colorado’s ongoing challenges with rockfall hazards, stating, “Colorado has got to be one of the No. 1 states that has to deal with rockfall mitigation.”

During this closure, CDOT is simultaneously conducting other maintenance tasks on Highway 3, including sealing cracks in the road surface. This proactive approach aims to enhance safety while the road remains closed.

EXPECTED COMPLETION: The rockfall mitigation project is anticipated to conclude by March 20, 2024, with French and her team committed to ensuring the roadway is safe for all travelers.

As this situation develops, residents and travelers are urged to stay informed about the ongoing work and potential impacts on other routes. CDOT is focused on maintaining safety and minimizing disruptions during these essential repairs.
