Veteran USDA Inspector George Veitch Dies at 76 After Lifelong Service

George Henry Veitch, Vietnam Veteran and USDA Inspector, Dies at 76

Ruthven, Iowa — George Henry Veitch, a decorated Vietnam War veteran and long-time USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service employee, died peacefully at his Ruthven home the morning of March 30, 2026. He was 76 years old.

Born in Spencer, Iowa, on May 21, 1949, Veitch built a career that spanned over four decades with the USDA, serving communities from Iowa to Hawaii. He was also a Purple Heart recipient for his service in Vietnam, where he served nearly two years with the 25th Infantry Division’s “Tropical Lightning.”

Veitch’s work with the USDA started in April 1973, initially stationed in Waterloo and Storm Lake, Iowa. His expertise and dedication made him a respected figure among colleagues and customers alike. Colleagues recall a man known for his infectious smile, readiness to help, and strong work ethic developed since his youth delivering newspapers and working various jobs including bartending and packing house duties.

In November 1982, Veitch took a leave to support his wife LeAnn’s work in Lusaka, Zambia, where he applied his skills to improve poultry operations for Hybrid Poultry LTD. The couple traveled extensively across East and Southern Africa, enriching Veitch’s life experiences with visits to several countries and wildlife sightings, notably giraffes.

USDA Career and Life Across Continents

Returning to the U.S. in 1984, Veitch rejoined the USDA in 1985 at a facility near Cottage Grove, Oregon. After 18 years there, he took another exciting posting to the Big Island of Hawaii, managing operations at the Hawaii Beef Producers plant in Paauilo, a small coastal town. This assignment suited his love for outdoor activities, especially golf, which he pursued avidly year-round.

After nearly two decades in Hawaii, the Veitches returned to Iowa in June 2021 for George’s retirement. Settling in Ruthven, he continued to impact his community through volunteerism and extending warmth and support to those around him.

Remembering a Life of Service and Dedication

George is survived by his wife of 44 years, LeAnn J. McGranahan, his sister Patricia Anderson, niece Chantelle Foote and great-nieces and nephews, as well as two beloved dogs and nine cats, reflecting his lifelong love for animals.

“George always had a ready smile and a story to share, and was the first to step up when help was needed,” noted family spokesperson.

A celebration of life is planned for July 2026. The family requests no donations, but suggests contributions to People for Pets in Spencer for those wishing to honor his memory.

George Veitch’s passing resonates beyond Iowa—his journey from a Vietnam combat veteran to a trusted federal inspector touches lives nationwide, exemplifying commitment, resilience, and service. His story reminds us of the enduring impact of dedicated public servants and veterans in every community.
