West Elementary Student Raises and Donates $10,000 to Veteran Charity

Young Ohio Artist Donates $10,000 to Support Veterans Through American Valor Foundation

WACO, Texas — A fourth-grade student from West Elementary stunned attendees at the annual Chris Kyle Memorial Benefit by presenting a $10,000 check to the American Valor Foundation on April 25. Ten-year-old Gunner Caldara raised the money by selling artwork featuring his empowering slogan, “You are Worth It,” demonstrating the power of youth-driven philanthropy.

Caldara arrived at the event at The Base at the Extraco Event Center just over $2,100 short of his total goal. However, the generosity of event donors, including a single large contribution, pushed his fundraising past the mark to $10,001. His emotional presentation surprised the Kyle family, founders of the foundation and parents of the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.

From Artist to Advocate: A Young Fundraiser’s Big Impact

“It was just so awesome being able to give Mr. Kyle and Mrs. Kyle the $10,000 check,” said Caldara. “I’m just grateful I get to do that stuff for such cool people.”

The American Valor Foundation, led by Deby and Wayne Kyle along with Chris Kyle’s brother Jeff, supports veterans, first responders, and their families—continuing the legacy of Chris Kyle, widely known as the deadliest sniper in U.S. history and the inspiration behind the film American Sniper.

Caldara’s dedication to the cause is remarkable: this marks his fourth consecutive year fund-raising for the foundation. Over this span, he has raised nearly $20,000—beginning with a $500 donation, then $2,000, followed by $7,403, and now reaching this milestone amount.

His initiative is especially notable given his background—both his parents serve as police officers in Waco, Texas, anchoring his commitment to supporting those who serve the community and country.

Community Support Propels Fundraiser Past Goal

Caldara thanked the audience and donors for their kindness, emphasizing that his goal was only reached because of the community’s generosity. The annual benefit honoring Chris Kyle continues to rally local and national support for veterans and first responders.

“I only reached my goal because of y’all’s generosity and being kind hearts,” Gunner Caldara said at the event.

For Ohio and U.S. readers, Caldara’s effort highlights a growing movement of young philanthropists stepping up to aid veterans and support mental health and family services. As veterans’ care remains a national priority, grassroots campaigns like this set a powerful example nationwide.

What’s Next for Gunner and the Foundation?

Caldara plans to keep fundraising annually, continuing to inspire others with his art and message. The American Valor Foundation announced ongoing programs benefiting veterans and first responders, spotlighting the urgent need for support at a time when service members and their families face mounting challenges.

This story exemplifies how individuals, even children, can generate tangible change right now by combining creativity, community spirit, and empathy. As this young artist’s efforts gain momentum, they remind readers across Ohio and the U.S. to consider their role in supporting those who defend the nation.
