Southland Baseball Semifinals Postponed by Rain, Rescheduled for Saturday at Joe Miller Field
The Southland Conference baseball tournament faced a major hiccup Friday as steady rain forced the cancellation of Day 2 action in the Lake Charles Bracket. Fans and players alike had to wait an extra day as the showdown between McNeese State and Nicholls was pushed to Saturday at 2 p.m. at Joe Miller Field.
The delay comes at a pivotal moment. Both teams started the double-elimination semifinal tournament strong—second-seeded McNeese (36-19) eked out a 5-4 win over Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, while third-seeded Nicholls (30-21) downed Northwestern State, 7-4. The two now face off in a winner’s bracket game, setting the stage for a crucial battle to advance.
McNeese Coach Landreneau Sees Opportunity in Day-Off
McNeese head coach James Landreneau welcomed the unexpected break, emphasizing recovery and preparation. “There isn’t much we could do today,” Landreneau said. “We will just use the day to rest, recover, and get ready for Saturday. We are excited to play.”
The Cowgirls stayed active despite the rain, using an hour of hitting time each at McNeese’s indoor facility. Landreneau noted the slight advantage of playing at home rather than idling in a hotel. “Maybe it helps us being at home a little instead of sitting around a hotel all day, but I think everybody will be ready to go tomorrow.”
McNeese Aims to Reverse Early Season Losses to Nicholls
The stakes are personal. McNeese lost all three early-season league matchups to Nicholls, a bitter 1-5 Southland record at that time. Each game was tight, but Nicholls edged out McNeese by just four total runs.
Since those losses, McNeese surged to claim 11 of their last 12 conference games, ultimately overtaking Nicholls for the second seed and earning the right to host this bracket. “That was just meant to be,” Landreneau said. “Now we have to make all that work pay off.”
Senior Maddie Weeks underlined the energy the home crowd brings. “We love to play at home in front of our fans. They give us energy,” she said. McNeese hopes that boost will help them finally get past Nicholls and advance deeper into the SLC tournament.
Player Update: Nyjah Fontenot Easing Back from Injury
The extended break may be a blessing for McNeese’s Nyjah Fontenot, who is recovering from a knee injury. Fontenot appeared as designated player in Thursday’s win and is being reintroduced carefully. “We are easing her back into it,” Landreneau confirmed.
Other Bracket Action and Upcoming Games
The Southland’s no. 7 seed, Stephen F. Austin (29-25), will attempt to join the 30-win club by defeating sixth-seeded Northwestern State (24-28) this Saturday at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.
The two teams with 1-1 records will clash Sunday at 5 p.m., while the title game is set for 11 a.m. Sunday with a potential second game to follow if needed, heightening the stakes for all involved.
What’s Next? Southland Fans Watch for Key Game Saturday
With the weather delay now in the rearview, eyes turn to Saturday’s intense McNeese-Nicholls matchup. The winner advances with momentum and positioning in the Southland Conference tournament race, while the loser will have to battle through elimination rounds.
McNeese enters the battle confident and well-rested, looking to rewrite early-season misfortunes and capitalize on home field advantage. Nicholls will likewise be hungry to maintain their postseason surge and halt McNeese’s hot run.
As the tournament moves deeper, Ohio and U.S. baseball enthusiasts tracking smaller conference playoffs nationwide will find Saturday’s games critical in shaping mid-major rankings and postseason stories.
